Meeting with representatives of Sakhalin indigenous community on implementation of Sakhalin Indigenous Minorities Development Plan (SIMDP) was held in Okha. SIMDP is a partnership programme implemented by Sakhalin Energy, Regional Council of the Authorised Representatives of the Sakhalin Indigenous Minorities and the island government.
This event was the first in a series of annual consultations conducted as part of regular interaction between Sakhalin Energy and indigenous community representatives. The information campaign envisages 15 meetings in 12 settlements of traditional residence and economic activities of Sakhalin indigenous minorities (SIM).
During the meeting the partners’ representatives delivered a presentation on implementation of the SIMDP-3, which main distinct feature is SIM capacity building and enhancing their role in managing the Plan. The presentation was followed by Q&A session, discussion of ideas for potential projects and other issues pertaining to the Plan and its programmes, as well as consulting of SIM representatives about conditions of project competition.
The attendees were reminded that UN General Assembly proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages to draw global attention to the risks that threaten the indigenous languages, and increase the relevance of these languages in supporting sustainable development process. In this regard, the partners invited the attendees of the meeting to take part in International Symposium on the Languages of the Indigenous Minorities of the Far East of Russia scheduled to be held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on 21-23 February 2019.
The participants congratulated students from Okha who were awarded scholarships under Education component of the Plan. The importance of educational projects was noted by Anastasia Lyu, Chair of SIM tribal community (obschina). “Children need to learn. That is why such projects are especially important for growth and development of SIM obschinas”, Anastasia said.
Calendar “Nivkh New Year: from A to Z”, which Company published in conjunction with the Year of Indigenous Languages, became a symbolic present for SIM representatives.
