Annual meeting dedicated to the results of field work under Joint Gray Whale Monitoring Programme was held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

Joint programme has been implemented since 2007 by Sakhalin Energy and Exxon Neftegas Limited, operator of Sakhalin-1 Project. In 2018 Gazpromneft-Sakhalin became the third partner in the programme.

In welcoming the participants, Natalya Koltunovich, Director of the Department of Environmental and Water Resources Protection of Sakhalin Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, noted the need to implement the programme.

“The whales’ database is being updated, and the results of the studies are used not only by the companies, but also by governmental agencies, researchers and concerned citizens, who care about biodiversity”, she said.

During the day the representatives of government bodies, business, as well as expert and scientific community heard presentations on implementation of the joint programme in 2018.  Past year photo identification research generated 33 000 images of the whales, as the result, Sakhalin gray whale catalogue was replenished with new species, most of which are calves.

Companies’ representatives emphasized the important role of the partnership and importance of complying with the safety rules during performance of any kind of work. The results of the 2018 season showed that all programme participants do apply the principle Protect Tomorrow Today and have a firm commitment to follow it in implementing 2019 workplans.
